XOXO-13 is the designation for an experimental spaceship Gregg names Hugs and Kisses. In space, when a tiny thing goes wrong it becomes a very large problem. Gregg pushes the forbidden red button to escape the certain crash he is headed to.

John Carroll's other Amazon freebies, among others, are about an Unholy Cow and about a guerrila attack at the North Pole by Sugar Plum Faeries, so I'm not quite sure why anyone would expect this short story to be a straight sci-fi adventure.The Test Pilot is a deadpan goof on the guys with the "right stuff", describing a fellow who has no interest in anything technical, ("it's complicated"), except flying. He will take any drug, endure any enhancement, suffer any indignity, in order to test the latest gizmos. Why? Who knows. He is tone deaf, oblivious and anti-social. He is a unique and fascinating character. Carroll has a good time skewering the test pilot mentality, while still paying it some respect.
A whole novel's worth? Not a chance. But a very interesting, deadpan and audacious short story.

I enjoyed this story much more then most free products on . It had creative ideas, decent characters and a good ending. I recommend this one to any person who's looking for a short read.
Not much to say about this story. It was interesting, ended in a strangely sarcastic way. Hard to describe, really, but I would have liked it to be a lot longer, as the story could have been fleshed out so much more. Rating is only OK, but it is still worth buying.
The main character was unusual and actually made me laugh. I would have read more and given this very short story a better rating if there had been been more. I checked the author but didn't find any continuation of this story/character.
Test pilot grabs one by the seat of their pants and takes off with a resounding roar! This read pins your eyes back and your ears to the sides of your head with the speed it takes off at. Nice read and very enjoyable, outstanding storyline and such a teaser.
Gets your blood pumping and one can easily feel what the characters are feeling...so kudos to the author's skills...they are sharp as all get out!
Goota love the humor of the main character in this short story. A daredevil who wants to remain ignorant of the technology his is employed to test.Right off the bat, the books starts off with the protagonist spouting off on various topics. He's a jacked up test pilot who lives on the edge. whats not to like about it.
Quick read. Made me laugh and smile reading it. I would read anything else by this author also
This short story is about a man who works for The Company on the moon as a tester for all sorts of new gadgets and ships. As a Sci-Fi geek, I really enjoyed hearing about the crazy new technologies the author had come up with. The biggest problem I had was the main character's attitude toward how all of these technologies actually functioned If it's really complicated then just don't explain it as I'm just here to test things and don't really care how they work. Curious me WANTED to know how everything worked, especially the weird suit he puts on at one point in which you can see the starry sky... It was a good story nonetheless.
It's a great short story of you like sci-fi. It's well written and flows nicely.
The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because of the editing, too many misspellings and jumbled sentences.
